The Same God

It seems like everything is always changing, doesn't it?
The weather, our relationships, our homes, our jobs.
Change, change, change. All the time.

Some change is good; some is not so good.
Whatever the case, changes are inevitable in this lifetime, and we are accustomed to them.

I think that in the midst of the constant changes that we see and feel from day to day, we tend to forget that our God does not change.
He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Have you ever looked through an old family photo album?
Did you laugh at the haircut that you had 4 years ago?
Did you gasp in horror when you caught sight of the sweater you wore to your sister's birthday party? ;-)
We change so constantly.
Not only the way we look, but also how we live.

Our interests switch from this to that.
Our friendships come and go.

But God remains.

Yesterday:
It was 1:34ish. Myself, as well as the rest of the concessions folks, were gathered on the West side of the lobby for our daily meeting/prayer time.
A dear lady who is new to our department sat on a wooden stool in front of the 20 or so of us
as she gave her testimony, shaking.
It was an incredible one.
She'd been through so much!
She told us about many hardships that she'd faced, including an intense anxiety disorder.
As she told about how God has healed her in so many ways, how He has made her a new person altogether, a simple thought crossed my mind.
"That's so God"
And then it occurred to me!
God isn't any different for this woman than He is for me.
He is the same God.
She and I have gone through different things, and we live entirely different lives,
Yet we serve the same God.

As she was talking, I just kept thinking something along the lines of "yeah, yeah, that's the God I know!"
What a comfort is the consistency of God.
Though we change, our lives change,
Our God does not change.
And He is the same God to me as He is to the missionary in Africa, or the Christian Author in Texas.

Amazing.

Life, Light, Vibrance, and Blindness.

I never fail to perpetually fail.
I once gained a good reputation, only to let that reputation become an identity.
The identity then became a character, and the character reminded me of someone I once knew, but I couldn't remember exactly whom.
So now who was I?
The character had taken my reputation and run with it, and I no longer held an identity.
I literally felt like a wandering mess of flesh, bone, and wasted pondering.
Where, where, was my mind?
And where was my heart?
The character may have tied them up and left them for dead, for all I knew.
What is one to do without a mind or a heart?
There are many who have them and are unaware of them, but that is another matter entirely.
I had once been very present in both mind and heart, but now they had fled.
It was like a world that was once fully dressed in color and light, had been stripped bare.
My mind used to dance! My heart would sing a melody every minute, only because it couldn't stand to keep such beauty from others.
The only thing that was dancing now was the troubling feeling that I may never catch a glimpse of anything other than gray, ever again.
Troubled, I decided to avoid approaching the subject of what may have led me to these bleak circumstances.
I decided it would be best if I just kept functioning. There was always the slim possibility that I would simply stumble upon some sense at some point.
So I kept breathing and breathing, for weeks and weeks.
Functioning as best one can, when one is missing multiple vital parts of their being.

One evening I found myself alone. Alone enough, anyway, for something that I'd been dreading, to pin me down.
It was cold, it was painful, and it was real.
It was truth.
It said to me; "listen to me! You vain, self-seeking child. Has your sight also fled from you so that you cannot see? Has your pride blinded you? Your pride, your pride! It has built itself into a tall, but feeble, tower. I am here to strike it down, so that you will see clearly what I will reveal to you."
Something inside of me crashed and burned.
But after the flames had died down and the smoke had cleared, I could see again!
And what a wretched sight was I, myself.
Self-seeking indeed. The character was me.
All this time! I was the very one robbing me of light and life and vibrance, all because of the pride-tower that I couldn't see past!

But how the truth has crushed the tower.

Light, life, vibrance! They still exist, and inside of me!
Who am I that I should be given such things?
In truth, I am unworthy of all of these and everything else.

But there is One (and only One) who freely gives us everything we need.
And I am humbled to have received these.
My heart sings and my thoughts dance once more.
Not because I've invited them back into my life, but because while I was still rejecting them, truth came to me and took away my blindness.

I never fail to perpetually fail,
But grace always succeeds.

His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
2 Peter 1:3

Do not be conformed any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-His good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:2

The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself 'who can bring me down to the ground?'
Obadiah 1:3

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.
John 17:17

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

The Voice that Sent the Beast Away

The Voice that Sent the Beast Away

Every day it dug a little deeper into my being; a consuming blackness constructed by lies and fear and rage. My heart the victim of an evil plot that desired to destroy me, to leave nothing. It could be labeled a beast, however, not the kind that you are initially frightened of. No, this was the kind that introduced itself warmly, like it longed to be your friend.
A bit lonely, desperate, and easily influenced, I welcomed it into my life.
The blackness that would slowly, deceivingly, tear apart my innocence.
Not only would it do that, but it would fill me with insecurity and a relentless hunger for some sort of comfort.
Not that I would have known that I was falling apart.
My friendly enemy assured me that I was stronger than one who needed things like love and peace and light.
It praised my effort toward it's plan.
Committed, I was.
After much longer a time than any being ought to be attacked; I believed that indeed, I was strong. Nothing could hurt me.
Nothing except for the black beast, the friendly enemy that was increasingly developing itself into a blazing black flame that would eventually scorch me to ashes.
As my feebly built tower of self-relying refuge came crashing down,
there came a single moment in which all the falsehood-whispering shadows that were my dark enemy, were silenced.
In the very midst of the terror that surrounded me, there was finally a stillness.
And then came the voice.
A voice that I had once been somewhat aware of,
but never had I heard it so clearly as I did in this moment.

"Do you not love me?"

It was not a voice draped in hatred, as was the one that I had become so accustomed to listening to.
It rather sounded like one who was hurt.
My heart was immediately numbed.
Suddenly, memories of promises made long ago came flooding into not only my memory, but my soul.
Remorse rose up inside of me.
What had I done?
Why had I not heard this voice before? Surely this was not the first time in so long that it had reached to me.
Everything in me gave way, and I was broken.
Broken as a fever breaks. Woefully sickening and terribly painful, but holding a promise to pass.
To leave it's inhabited to become well again.

In the seasons following, I became much more familiar with the Voice that had reached to me on that day.
It became a Voice that I relied on.
It held me when I shook as I wept uncontrollably,
It led me in such a way that was clear, but not demanding or hurtful,
It introduced me to meaning and light, when all I'd known for so long was meaningless motions and a crushing darkness.
It faced my deceiver; the one who I had so well been acquainted with, the one who had made me so very empty and cold.
The Voice was stronger than the blackness, it demanded that the beast return to it's lair and let me be.
Over time, the Voice became my friend, my shelter, my Father.
Yes, He was undeniably good to me.
He stilled the remaining shaking in my soul and drenched me in a light that made me free.
Finally! At long last, I was breathing! Just like a real, alive, being.

He gave me a glimpse at an unshakable truth:
That I had never been strong. No, indeed.
Strong was not for me to be.
It was for my Father to be.

I was not only weak, but I was helpless.
After having been rescued from the beast that had dwelt within me,
I could know this in the fullest.

My Father himself was strength.
And when He entered into me, there was the strength.
Not only that, but hope,
And joy!
Life and breath!

What a difference it is between death and life,
Having tasted one and drinking in the other, I can tell you with much certainty,
Life is something that not one ought to be without.
My Father has said that He would slay any beast for any of His children, if only they would ask Him.
It hurts me to know that the blackness still consumes so many,
There are so many ones that never even know that they are being scorched from the inside out by the black flame.
Take heart, my friends who are tired and shaking with hatred or fear or longing or suffering... The beast will flee at the mention of my Father's Name.
He is Lord.
Lord over both darkness and light. Wherever he sends either, that is where they go.
The wicked flame is snuffed out when He tells it to be.
There is not one in any place that can stand against Him,
And because He is my strength, my refuge,
I can not be taken over by such evil again.

My dear friends, I pray that you will not seek any fullness in yourselves; it is not there. It lives in the One who is full. Full of everything you have desired and searched for all this time and He will not deny you it when you come to Him with nothing but openness and brokenness and a genuine desire to listen to the Voice.

Humbling Moment

I can't tell you how many times I've wondered
"What is it about me that God thought was worth saving?"

He just revealed this to me:

It's not that I have anything to offer that I was worth saving,
It's not that I'm so special that He just couldn't let me go,
It's that He is worthy of praise from a helpless soul that's been rescued.
He alone deserves the glory, all the glory.

Here for a while I thought that I must really be something special.
Ha!

No, We're no good until He's drenched us in His mercy.
Which makes me tremendously glad that He is merciful;
I mean, He owns everything anyway, He doesn't have to have compassion on us.
But He does!

And if that's not reason enough for you and I to give Him a big ol' "thank you!",
I don't know what is.

Until next post,
A gratefully humbled Chelsea

A Quick Poem

What did I deserve but destruction?
What did I receive? Redemption.
How lavish a love that would choose to save me;
How great is The Lord who would let me go free!
What did I accomplish but staining with sin?
What was I before He entered within?
How massive the glory that belongs to The Lord;
How joyful a heart that is fully restored.
What strength do I have of my own?
What motive have I but the sinfully-prone?
How complete is the grace, amazing and strong.
How wonderous The Lord to whom I belong!

He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.

Hardships.

Some years ago (I don't know the exact number, I just know that I was still quite young), our family faced various struggles within the course of two-three years. It seemed like we were bombed with thing after thing. I still remember vividly the many tears that we all shed over sicknesses, losses, and all sorts of things that just didn't seem to stop pounding us.
One of those things was a sickness that came over my mom.
I remember being absolutely terrified that she would lose her life...
it was somewhere during that time that I was diagnosed with "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder", which I know is a somewhat common disorder.. many people that I know have it to some degree. \

As a young girl, I became very scared of germs and would also struggle with frightening thoughts that just would not leave me alone due to the disorder.
I had to see a shrink; and she gave me some great advice on how to push the thoughts aside and let them vanish. So the disorder died down for a while.
We are sure that my anorexia issues were a branch of that disorder, hitting me at the age of 14.
Again, I was sent to a shrink. This time, I was also put into medical treatment.
After a rough year of recovery, that died down as well.

Recently, the OCD has been attacking me again.
And I won't lie: these past few weeks have been quite gloomy for me.
I've questioned things, I've struggled with thoughts that I knew weren't really from my right mind, and I've tried to ignore it all.

Here's the thing. Life isn't always a ray of sunshine and a beautiful song.

On a drive home recently, I expressed openly to the Lord that this felt like "being drenched in black paint"; like I was smothered in a darkness that I couldn't just shake off.

And sometimes life is like that. Because we cannot create joy.
Happiness, maybe.
Joy? no.

Also, we do not choose the occurances of our lifetime.

I recently had the priviledge of praying with a family that was struggling with the hardship of a family member facing cancer.
I looked into the eyes of the girl who was asking for prayer. She couldn't have been more than ten years old.. but her eyes didn't express fear. I could see a hope in her like I've never seen in someone so young.
Like she believed with everything in her that the Lord was in control, and He would take care of her family member.
And she is so right to believe that!!
Now I'm wondering what it would be like to have a faith like that. Unquestioned and confident.
It truly is a childlike faith! That is what we're called to have, even in the scariest of struggles.

I'm still a little shaky myself, it's like I'm in a recovery process, again. And just now, I'm coming to realize that maybe I am. It's time for me to trust that the Lord is watching my every move, He knows my every heartbeat, my every breath.
And He loves me bigger than I could ever comprehend. Praise His Name!

He is true and real and the One we ought to seek our entire lives,
to trust in when the going gets tough.
And when the going stays tough for what seems like forever.

I've been struck many times by the lyrics of a song that I've been hearing on the radio.
They go like this:
Even when my eyes are dry,
even when my soul is tired,
even when my hands are heavy,
I will lift them up to you.
It's not about how I feel,
Oh, Lord, I am here for You.
I exist for You.

Love it.
